Friends for Keeps

            The greatest gift of life is friendship. We cannot live alone in society. We need friends for company and conference. They’re our source of strength whenever we are facing ups and downs. Friends are the ones who can help and support us in every aspect of our life. Hence, friend plays its huge role in everyone’s life. It can be described as one of the indispensable factor of being a humankind. We can categorized friends into four different types; acquaintances, casual friends, close friends, and intimate friends.

            The first type is acquaintances. These people you says “hello” to in the hall, but you don’t make a point to see them socially. Classmates you recognize, friends of friends, neighbors who live in your area, people who ride the same bus you do, etc., fall into this category.

            The second type is casual friends. These are friends who come into your life because of a special interest or common purpose. It’s someone you’re assigned to work with on a project, someone who’s on the debate team with you, attends your church, etc.

            The third type is close friends. These friends you hang around with, go to the movies with, whose homes you visit and who you invite into your home. You may have no special interest other that talking and sharing your feelings, thoughts, and dreams. You can argue and express different opinions without being afraid or spoiling the friendship.

            The fourth and the last type is intimate friends. These friends have the freedom to tell you the truth, no matter how it may affect you. They know all about you and you know all about them. Nothing is kept from the other. Intimate friends don’t just appear in our lives, but develop through the stages of friendship from acquaintance up to the higher level of intimacy.

            It’s a fact that there are various types of friends. But no matter how many friends we may encounter in life, we met them for a reason. A reason that will be unfold when we develop and cultivate our friendship towards them.
